Are Home Grown Vegies Making a Comeback?

Accidental Unintended Vegetable GardenImage by cogdogblog via FlickrIt seems that everyone I talk to these days is growing their own vegetables in the backyard. Makes me wonder if the humble backyard vegie garden is making a comeback? It certainly seems to be around these parts. I know many people are frustrated with the lack of fresh vegies available locally and the price we pay for what seems to be second grade quality fruit and veg.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in people growing their own gardens again or is it just out here in the country?

I have certainly noticed it. It is something I have been thinking about for a while, but just can't work out where to do it in my garden. We have enjoyed our first peach harvest though & are anxiously waiting on apples, pears & plums next season when our trees are another year older. And I think I will try tomatos & strawberries next year too.

I think the revival of the backyard vegetable garden revolves around more than just freshness and quality. Many people are growing their own food because they can no longer afford to purchase the high priced produce at the store. Also, there is concern for the future of our current system. Given the issues that were experienced here in the Atlanta area last year when there was no gas to ship food in for a few weeks, we're starting to realize that the current dependence we have on our grocery stores is a real threat to our survival should anything truly horrible happen to take that freedom away.

So, we start learning more about gardens and planning to grow our own in order to reduce our dependence on a flawed system.

Definitely a trend happening -- I have noticed that the local Bunnings is stocking more veg than it was a few years ago.

Kelli - we've just started trying to establish fruit trees. To me, they are definitely the way to go in terms of low maintenance and high production.

Mom - I agree. I think it's a very positive move on all fronts and I'm pleased to see so many are taking it up.

Chookie - that's interesting. I'll have to pay more attention. More demand should hopefully widen the availability of various seedlings (one can only hope).

I noticed that someone, well several someones, I know have started to grow vegetables. A few young kids at work who all hang out together have put pots on the balcony of one of them and they've planted tomatoes and a few other things. These kids are still very early 20's so there off to a good growing start. By the time they have their own homes they'll know more about what and how to grow.
