Preparing the Garden When You're Going Away

As a child, I remember my grandparents being restricted on when they could come and visit us, based on their garden. There were times of the year when they couldn't come at all or would only come for a few days because their garden simply couldn't survive without them.

These days I guess there are a few more options in terms of technology. Things like timers that can be set up to automatically water the garden. That's if you have them.

When we planned to go away, I hadn't prepared myself for the early onset of summer. This time of year is supposed to be spring. Mild weather and enough rain to keep the garden moist. Mmmm....not so much around here lately.

I'm not so attached to my garden that I'm not prepared to leave it. But it has occured to me that I would be a little upset if we get back and find my garden has all shrivelled up and died.

So we're giving it a good soaking and hoping the elements are not too unkind to it while we're away.

Anyone have any hints for caring for a garden when you're not going to be there to care for it?

Do you have a neighbour who is willing to look in on things and water a bit now and then? I wouldn't be planting anything new before you go, newly sprouted seeds wil die quick smart.

I mentioned the same thing to hubby this afternoon when he was planting a few things. Tis hard! i am not dure how much we can combine holidays at this time of year and starting a summer garden. Not like we have lots of choice with holiday times like retirees do.

This is great information. I will use this soon as we'll be out of town for several weeks.

Would you be interested in a link exchange with my newest blog? It sure could use a little link-love to get up and running and your blog seems to be a somewhat similar niche.

River - we do have a neighbour coming to feed the animals but it's a bit of a distance to come so I feel funny about asking them to do too much while they're here.

L - no. I'm leaving any planting until I get back so at least it's established plants. I just wish it weren't quite so hot already.

Kathy - you have a lovely blog. I don't usually "do" exchanges but I have added a link to your blog in my sidebar. :)

Perhaps you could set a few sprinklers on a timer? Or set a few sprinklers and have the neighbour turn them on when they arrive to feed the animals and turn them off again when they leave?

It is quite hot up here these days, I can understand your concern.

I think the suggestion of turning on the taps when the neighbour feeds the animals and turning them off when he leaves sounds like and excellent solution.

My mother used to always put her potplants in the downstairs shower - no hot sun to dry out and a great place to water them!!!

Good luck and enjoy the holiday.
