There was one broccoli plant in my garden that just did not seem to grow very well. In fact, it was so undergrown that I had stopped checking on it regular. So it was quite a surprise to look out our lounge room window the other day and spot this HUGE head of broccoli growing on this tiny plant. Perhaps a survival instinct had kicked in or something? I'm not sure what happened.
Of course, I'm kicking myself that I didn't take a photograph. I was in a hurry the day I picked it and it got chopped up for tea pretty much immediately.
I did take the time to weigh it though and it weighed in at almost 700g!!!! Which is a LOT given most of my other heads have been under 100g each.
If only I knew WHY this particular plant had grown such a big head.
I think that's one of the things I find most frustrating about gardening. Things can go well or not go well without me really understanding the "why's". Which means I have very little chance of repeating the same success.
It's a bit of a "luck of the draw" game isn't it?

Massive Broccoli

Why? Probably getting ready to set seed for the next generation. Plants often do things like that. Especially in dry times you might notice creepers and trees etc have a much more vigorous flowering session because the plant is determined to reproduce and thus survive.
Perhaps I should "treat em mean, keep 'em keen" more often. ;)
