Broccoli - Take 2

BroccoliImage via WikipediaWell, the broccoli seedlings I had grown from seed haven't done such a good job of bouncing back. So I've decided to try purchased seedlings. I've lost my seeds anyway so it was either buy a new packet or spend similar money on seedlings. Fingers crossed these seedlings don't get chewed too much.

I'm a bit of a cheapskate so prefer to grow what I can from seeds. However, I was so stunned by how different the broccoli was that we grew last year compared to what we buy in the stores (so much greener) that I really want to grow our own again.

It's more than a money issue in my mind. It's a health issue.

So, I have 6 seedlings in the ground. I've mixed them around a bit. Some in each garden bed. And a couple are being sheltered by the pumpkin plants at the moment. So I'm really hoping they won't all get munched away.

I'll be keeping a close eye on them anyway.

Hiding the new seedlings is a great way to fool the munchers. It's the original principle behind cottage gardening where flowers herbs and vegies were all mixed. Planting one species in an individual bed in nice neat rows is just like laying out an all you can eat smorgasboard for the slugs, snails and other critters. By mixing your beds egglaying moths and other pests can't distinguish your new seedlings from the other shapes and scents surrounding them.

Thanks for that River - I was just coming on to say how quickly any broccoli has disappeared whenever we have tried - unfortunately due to pests - will try and mix it up on them!
