Image via Wikipedia I'm trying to decide how long to leave my red cabbages in the garden. I'd like to pick them one at a time rather than all at once (not that they seem to be all at the same stage).
One has a firmish head on it but isn't very big (although the red/purple cabbage halves I've bought in the supermarket have been smaller than the green ones anyway).
I've done a bit of a google search and nothing much has come up other than to harvest when the head feels firm.
Anyone have any experience in this area they'd be willing to share?

I've never grown cabbages so i can't help with this one. I can only suggest you sacrifice one by cutting it and seeing how well developed the head might be.If you think it needs more growth then don't pick any others until they feel firmer than the one you've just picked. Then of course cook it or do whatever you were planning with it to see if it's tasty.

Surely the best time to harvest a cabbage is when you want to eat one? They seem to hold for quite a while. The head grows bigger over time, but so do the ribs, so it's preferable to eat them while they're smallish, unless your family is a lot bigger than I think it is.
