I Have Set Myself a Goal

I now have a goal for my gardening efforts.

I would like to produce around $100 of food in the garden per month (well per 4 weeks really).

My deadline for this goal?

July 2nd 2009. Which is my 35th birthday!!! :-)

So, basically $25 of food per week (on average).

At the rate fruit & veg prices are going - that might not BE much produce by then. ;)

I'm thinking I'll need to do a couple of things in order to progress toward this goal.

1. Start keeping better records of what I'm yielding from my garden NOW and it's approximate market value at the time.

2. Plant more often than once or twice a month. I've read that if you want to eat daily from the garden, you have to plant daily. However, one plant often yields for a number of weeks. I'm going to aim to plant weekly rather than daily.

No idea how I'll go with this goal but I'm putting it out there nonetheless and we'll see how things progress from there.

My ultimate goal is to feed us as much of our fresh produce as possible from the garden. But I thought it was time to set an interim goal and see if I can achieve that first.

Our current spending on fruit & veg is around $50 per week so it's about half of our produce coming from the garden.

What an exciting thing to do - must try goals myself some time.

Check out some moon planting information, also. You may not be best to plant every day, perhaps?

Great goals. Let us know how it goes. I'm only growing parsley and bush beans at the moment.

Jeanie - yeah, I'm pretty excited. I'm hoping it'll be a way for me to keep better track of what I'm doing and continue to slowly expand.

I do follow moon planting (at least some of the time) and yes, that's a good point. It's not always a good time for planting anyway.

River - I will provide updates. I suspect this week it'll be about 10c (if I'm lucky ;) ). But it'll be a good way to record what I'm yielding and keep better track (I hope).

I figure parsley and bush beans is better than nothing right? Oh, and the 10c this week? Will probably be from parsley. ROFLOL. So you'll be about at the same point as me right now. :)

Good luck -- I'm just not organised enough to remember to note everything down! At least the blog helps me remember what I've planted. Not that I'm planting much atm -- it's far too wet to plant, and more rain is forecast for next week! We gardeners are never satisfied.

Chookie - that's exactly why I started this blog. To try and help me keep better records. It is helping. I'm hoping this challenge will help that little bit more. Time will tell.

a great goal -
I want to grow my own vegies but can't see it being that much of a saving ... maybe I need a bigger garden.

This sounds like a great idea, between trying to declutter my house and get things under control I have been really neglecting my garden. I am trying to get myself organised enough to commit to a certain amount of time outside in the garden each day. My plan at the moment is to get it tidied up (thats edging etc the whole damn lot) then I want to plant a cover crop to put some nutrients back into the ground to get vegies growing well. Here's hoping we can both achieve what we are aiming for

baby amore - babysteps are important with gardening. $25 a week is about half our weekly fruit & veg expenditure right now. It IS a lofty goal (at least until we get some fruit trees established).

katrina - sounds like some hard work ahead. :) Hope you get done what you're hoping. It can be hard to keep everything in balance can't it.
