Go Organic

One of the reasons I've been wanting to grow our own food, is to give us access to organically grown, fresh food. There have been many debates about whether organically grown food really DOES have any benefits over non-organically grown food.

I just read this little snippet this morning in my Wellbeing magazine.

"A new study from Newcastle University (UK) has made it official: organic is better. The Newcastle University researchers raise cattle and grow fruit and vegetables on 725 acres of organic and non-organic farms situated next to each other. The early results of the study show organic produce has up to 40 percent more antioxidants than non-organically grown produce."

Yah for home grown! :) Providing it's organic of course.

Ours isn't strictly "organic". DH sprayed the tomatoes the other day with fly spray (just some of them) in his attempt to kill a red-back residing in there. Of course, I made sure I washed the tomatoes well and given I was about to pick them, I doubt it had a LOT of effect on the actual nutrition of the tomatoes. ;)

I love it when I read of studies like this. It makes me more determined to grow as much of our food as I can. Between the freshness you just can't get by buying elsewhere, and the control over what chemicals are used on the produce, home grown really is a WINNER! :)

The very best thing about growing your own is wandering out into the garden, seeing and picking what's ripe and then eating the freshest food in the world. "Fresh" from your local supermarket just doesn't compare.

That's for sure! Fresh is who knows how old, especially from our supermarket.
